Where they started
People who watch videos on their phone usually need three or four separate apps: one to play, one to shrink a large file before sharing, one to cut a clip, one to change the format. We wanted a single app that does the everyday jobs well, with a player that feels as responsive as the established ones.
What we built
PlayHub is an Android video player for the videos stored on a phone. Unlike a plain player, it also has a media toolkit: compress large videos, trim a clip on a timeline, convert between formats and create GIFs. Everything is processed on the device.
- A custom player built on Media3 ExoPlayer: swipe gestures, a seek bar with live preview, subtitles, audio-track switching and picture-in-picture
- A toolkit on Media3 Transformer to compress, trim and convert, running in a foreground service so exports continue when the user leaves the screen
- A GIF maker with a custom colour-quantising encoder
- A library with folders, search, sort, watch history and favourites, plus a web shortcuts tab for one-tap links
- A guided first-run flow with a welcome screen, three feature slides and permissions
- Native-ad monetisation that stays out of the way: ads sit below buttons and navigation and never appear over video playback
